Art Nouveau
This style of art was post popular during 1890-1910, it spread to multiple countries but it was founded in many different names and only the English used the French name "Art Nouveau".
Antoni Gaudi and Victor Horta where very influenced by this style.
This is one of Gaudi 's designs and till this this there 's still work going on in this basilica named "La Sagrada Familia" The construction began in 1882. Gaudi died in a traffic accident and was buried right here in this basilica. Nowadays Gaudi is considered being a genius creating such breath-taking designs despite the fact that he was colour blind but it would not been to achieve his dreams if it was not for his fellow companion Joseph Maria Jujol.
In his architecture if we ignore the top part for a moment we see a triangle shaped form that is creating movement to the middle then the four towers are creating movement upward. It is like the bottom part is warping to the middle to make the side look smaller than the middle and it is as if Gaudi wanted us to look directly in the middle when we first take a look at the building as if there if something important going on.
On the other hand we see the stair case of Horta 's house and studio but today it is the "Musée Horta" or in other words "The Victor Horta Museum". We could see movement in the stairs railing and even in the fairy-ish wall background, plain enough but one of his most beautiful designs that nowadays it is impossible the put at least on foot on the stairs with the crowd that goes to visit the museum.

Art Deco
Art Deco 1920-1940 reached the apex of it's popularity between two global conflicts World War I and World War II. Art Deco can be found in architecture, interiors, furniture, fashion, jewellery, paintings, graphics, costumes, glass and ceramics and mainly bold colours are used.
There where even cars that were inspired from Art Deco, the Rolls-Royce that surely does not need any introduction. It's symmetry, curves and the bright colours gives you a very good idea that it is inspired from Art Deco. The catch is that even tough the simplicity of the car the Rolls-Royce made a name for themselves once again from taking the simplicity from Art Deco and applying it to their car.

The Empire State building in inspired from Art Deco as well the tall vertical lines kind of moving upwards are creating a sense of height and movement for the building. On the right we are seeing a shot of the building from a very low position to give us the sense as if we are at the bottom and we are looking upwards to the the building. The building is 381m long. And it structure can give us an idea of its height aswell.
The Chrysler Building on the right is an Art Deco aswell, it is length is 63m that means not even as half of the Empire State building. The top of the building is kind of made up of triangular shapes which give us sense of movement. As the Empire state it is mostly the vertical lines that are creating movement in this building.

Part 2
The Art Deco style was at it 's peak between the 1930 and 1940, it first appeared in France after World War 1. The style often involves geometrical shapes and solid colours and after a short period of time the style spread to many countries around the world, interior designers took notice of this movement and started to apply some of these styles in their designs. Hence not only in interior and exterior design these styles were applied but even to household ornaments and text. Also some architects made a name for themselves by designing buildings on this style for example William Van Alen for designing the Chrysler Building. Art Deco itself gives a sense of luxury and glamour. Two artists who influenced the principles of Art Deco are Hector Guimard and Paul Bellot. In the United States there are many good examples of Art Deco buildings and auto mobiles. Even in Malta one could find some few good examples of Art Deco buildings.
I have created a series of sketches in pencil and ink before moving on to photoshop. The sketches will not be imported in photoshop but will serve as the basis of my poster design and layout. I have decided to use found images and edit them as required in order to create a poster for a film based on cars and city life. As discussed in the art section of this blog my main point of reference is the artistic movement known as Futurism. I want to capture speed and dynamism in order to design a poster that reflects the theme of this imaginary film.
After doing some research about film posters related to similar themes I have decided to re-interpret the poster of the film 'Fast and Furious' through an Art Deco period. The car and the building seen in the poster belong to the Art Deco period while the style applied reflects the Futurist approach. To create a sense of speed and motion I have copied multiple layers of the same car and superimposed them on top of each other. I have used different opacities and various blur effects in photoshop - radial blur and motion blur.
The Art Deco elements may be seen in the type of car chosen - Rolls Royce
and the towering building in the background known as the 'Raleigh Building'. This type of building is similar to New York's 'Empire Sate Building', characterised by straight lines and upward direction. The overall style of the poster is an attempt to capture the Art Deco period of the 1920's and 1930's. The main difficulty was in keeping the Art Deco style throughout.
The automobile and the building were chosen from a selection of images downloaded from the internet. I used the path tool to knockout the original background of the car as I wanted to use the Art Deco building as a background for my poster. To further enhance the Art Deco symbolism I have reproduced the emblem of the Rolls Royce to tie together all the elements present in the poster. Before settling for the Rolls Royce I have also looked at other Art Deco car models such as: 1938 Delage D8-120S Saoutchik; 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt; 1938 Tatra T97; 1938 Hispano-Suiza H68 Dubonnet. The Rolls Royce seems to be one of the most popular icons of Art Deco automobiles and so I chose it for my poster.
The typography used is 'Fenwick 3D' because it matches the Art Deco elements that make up the poster. I have created various layers of this font and applied various photoshop filters to make the title of the film look more dynamic. The poster brings together a wide range of design styles and approaches in order to promote a film in which speed and movement are central.
